Draft Giving Feedback

todo.

Invalid date, tags: feedback

netflix: Publicly known open honest direct feedback culture

example: MoM asks M A about IC B, A says B does no good work (usually with a lot of emotion). MoM asks how B reacted to it? A says “would never say that directly”

Giving feedback is hard, needs practice

Building a culture of feedback is something we need to actively do

Very high chance of giving difficult feedback in next months

First question to ask yourself: are you a pusher or puller? In most of the cases I had to give feedback, I pushed it.

Why offer? motives?

  • improve somebodies perf
  • Model a culture of feedback
  • Control of other person?

Be clear about that!

Livecycle

  • feedback given
  • Heard
  • Actioned

Delivery

About behaviour instead of identity! Was the person acting as leader or follower in the situation?

Situation: Planning meeting somebody estimates stories way of Asks questions which were already answered

SBI

In the planning meeting on today, you were working on your laptop so I had to answer some of your questions which were already asked answered. Why?

NVC

“When I had to repeat answers to some of your questions in the planning meeting today (questions which were asked already), I felt frustrated because I’m needing everybody’s attention to uncover unknown aspects of a story. Would you be able to use your phone/close laptop?” [observation][emotion] [need][request]

Observations versus evaluations > you didn’t listen/I had to repeat questions to answers Emotions versus thoughts > feel can be replaced with think? No emotion

  • Direct “performance not up to standard, colleagues also said that”
  • Compassionate “worrying that you’re not perf. Well because…”
  • Direct again Next steps if not improving

Actioning

What will you do about it? Not always your job to come up with solutions

Ask questions to validate the person understood what you want her to change Action items in tracking doc of 1o1

Accountability dial

Talking about consequences

  • Reducing flexibility of work hours
  • Switching around roles and responsibility
  • A formal warning
  • Extra training
  • Terminating employment
